The Golden Lands is the first in a series of six volumes on Buddhist Architecture by Indian architect and scholar Vikram Lall. The main emphasis of the book lies on the exploration of Buddhist architecture as a product of deeper cultural processes in which the importance of interaction between cultures, patronage, local building traditions, and symbolism define architectural shape. The non-invasive approach of Buddhist philosophy results in an architectural style defined by diversity of form, function and methodology, which seeks to adapt to local traditions rather than impose fixed design ideals. The book discusses a selection temples, monasteries, caves and monuments found in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. It uses detailed photography and drawings of plans, sections and elevations to explain the symbolic meaning of these structures, and to illustrate the use and application of different materials to convey meaning within particular regions.
